Executive functions (EF), often thought of as the command center of the brain, are critical tools to navigate one’s way through the many challenges of life. EF are commonly broken down into three neurocognitive concepts: inhibitory control, working memory, and cognitive flexibility. This paper will review the skills and abilities associated with each of these three concepts, the neurocognitive disorders characterized by EF impairment, as well as the recommended interventions. This paper will then review case material, emphasizing the importance of a relational approach in the treatment of individuals with EF impairment.
