Humans are social beings. Social engagement is crucial to our functioning and is consistently associated with positive outcomes across the life span. Challenges in socialization are a centerpiece of the autism spectrum and a difficulty for people with many types of neurodivergence. Loneliness, isolation, and depression are common outcomes for autistic people. This paper, based on interviews with members of a performing arts community, explores how participation in a neuro-inclusive theater company enhances individuals’ social satisfaction, self-esteem and sense of belonging. The author proposes that this type of natural community may serve as a valuable supplement to other supports, with unique offerings for this population.
