The first paper in this number of the Journal, “A Visionary Rumour”, is by Professor Jung. It is a much shortened version of a volume entitled Flying Saucers: A Modern Myth, just published by Routledge & Kegan Paul. To them our thanks are due for permission to reproduce parts of the text.
Following Jung's essay is one by Dr. C. A. Meier which discusses in some detail the theory of “Projection, Transference, and the Subject-Object Relation”. Since flying saucers raise the problem of how object and projection are related—Jung leaves open the question of whether the phenomena have an objective reality or can be explained by projection alone—these two essays will amplify each other.
In his essay Jung has presented evidence for considering Ufos to be the result of unusual activity in the collective unconscious and in his volume Flying Saucers he hints that the phenomena are an expression of the crisis through which our civilization is passing. If this be so, then what he has written here should be considered in relation to his recent essay, The Undiscovered Self. This small volume is discussed in the Critical Notices of the present issue. Further it is fortunate that a major volume of the Collected Works, Psychology and Religion: West and East, has appeared sufficiently near the same time for it also to be made the subject of a dialectic by three competent authorities. The subject bears suggestively on Jung's important and significant essay, which we are happy to publish together with notices of his other publications.
