The author reviews in simple language the field of psychiatric theory and practice, both ‘body-minded’ and ‘psyche-minded’, together with the place for these concepts in the professional work of non-medical people such as the clergy. At the end of the pamphlet comes a section on the growth of moral sense. Here Fordham moves from clear exposition of familiar material to a vividly interesting comparison between an instance of a two-year-old's sudden grasp of a sense of concern and responsibility within his relationship to his parents and the problems involved in promoting therapeutically, rather than interfering with, a similar moment of growth in an adult patient.
