This is the first of three promised papers on the subject and is mainly introductory. After a review of various theories of the origins and meaning of myths it gives an admirably clear account of the theory of archetypes, mentioning and disposing of several of the current misunderstandings of Jung's concept. Marshak goes on to compare this in a most interesting way with Konrad Lorenz's concept of innate schemata which he and the
whole school of ethologists use to understand the behaviour of all living animals. One looks forward to her elaboration of her theme in the next two articles.
