A collection of remarks by Jung taken down word for word by Ostrowski-Sachs during conversations with him, and also selections from his comments during discussions at Eranos meetings. They are chosen from material covering the twenty years before his death. They are arranged roughly under such headings as ‘animus’ and ‘anima’, the ‘self’, ‘psychotherapy’ and so on, but there is nowhere any indication of the date when the note was taken. All have the imprint of spontaneous, not too considered and worked out opinions such as might well be the case in private conversation. They cover in this way many of his interests as seen in his published books of this period. Frau Ostrowski points this out herself and adds that she is aware that the collection is a personal treasure of her own, it no doubt also carries her own imprint in that it must have been selected through the prism of what was significant to her. For this we must thank her for her courage in making it public. She adds that she hopes that the very informality of the style will recall Jung's manner of speaking. His style here comes out as almost exuberantly metaphorical, with here and there a dry humorous note. One can well believe that to those who knew him this monograph may bring back vivid memories of his more informal moments. And this surely must be the only reason for publishing such collections. The last section given over to random autobiographical talk conveys a sense of loneliness and depression.
