The authors, taking as a starting point a paper by Fordham on the Jungian concept of the self (‘The empirical foundations and theories of the self in Jung's works’), re-examine theoretically, and without reference to clinical material, the plurality of the meanings connected with this idea. They propose a double epistemological approach (structure and dialectic tension), towards the understanding of the contradictory pairs of concepts grouped under the term ‘self’.
