I think that the past experiences of the anti-semitic persecutions, lived either directly or indirectly, are not so important in determining the neurosis in Jews as the process of assimilation. By this term we mean identification with cultural systems other than Jewish Weltanschauungen. This identification gives rise to the ego alienation of the Jew from his original archetypal constellations expressed by the Jewish culture; therefore the frequent processes of unconscious hypercompensations become sources of neurosis.
