This book stems from the Philadelphia Psychiatric Centre. The two chapters by Dr Friedman, the Director of the project, are the most satisfactory and his overview of the family and female sexual delinquency is particularly valuable.
Few psychotherapists would quarrel with his statement that the results of using traditional psychoanalytically orientated individual psychotherapy, with the teenage promiscuous and sexually delinquent girl, have generally not been impressive and the course of transference and counter-transference has often been precarious.
Friedman and his co-workers therefore concentrated on family therapy and the book contains a wealth of elucidative clinical material.
Inevitably a work produced by ten different authors suffers from unevenness of style and some of the detailed commentary of the material makes for difficult reading.
The book includes a chapter on the ‘Evaluation of training in family therapy’ and one on answers to typical questions of the trainee therapist.
