Dr Ziegler is well known to us for his contributions in the field of psychosomatic phenomena and illness. His book Morbismus (Zürich 1980) was reviewed in this journal. Isotonic and
isometric modes of neuromuscular activity are described and related to Olympic mythology. Atlas embodies the mythology of isometry, Prometheus that of isotonometry. A thorough knowledge of anatomy, neurophysiology and psychopathology, enlivened by archetypal thought and amplification, relentlessly and inevitably leads to the concept of syndromes as incarnation of archetypal images. No matter how profound the understanding of these processes, the author stresses that the disease, once established, is unlikely to alter in analysis and working through. Less deep somatisation does change. The individuation process has its own momentum, and illness is one of its expressions.
I regret that Dr Ziegler's search and research is only accessible to German speaking members.
