The first of these papers was written in 1946, the last in 1987. Through them we may follow Main as he develops the concept of a therapeutic community from its beginnings in his psychiatric experiences during and after the 1939-45 war to its maturing in the organisation of the Cassel Hospital in the Sixties and Seventies.
