This year, Dr John Beebe, the first US Editor of the Journal, completes his term of office. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the contribution John has made to the pioneering task of enabling the Journal to grow to its present international stature, and to thank him. His skills combine a capacity for a broad overview when necessary with a tireless attention to detail and endless patience in editing, and a quick perceptiveness which enables him to see potential where it is not obvious with a sound judgement. He has also, among many other things, introduced us to a more active style of editing which has enhanced our editorial repertoire and of which many authors are deeply appreciative. Most of all, however, John's warmth and ready responsiveness have enriched our work together, and I trust that our friendship will continued. We wish him well with the writing he hopes to have more time to pursue.
We now welcome Dr Joseph Cambray as our new American Editor. Coline and I had the pleasure of meeting Joe at the Sebasco Conference last year. We look forward to working increasingly closely with him, and to the further stimulating developments which our collaboration with our American friends will bring.
