First published in 1958, with a foreword by Jung, this re-edition of the work still holds an interest for those wishing to research the basis of para-phenomena from a Jungian perspective. The material used for the book derives from letters written in response to an inquiry, initiated by a popular Swiss magazine in 1954 and 1955. Having received 1200 responses by readers about ‘irrational’ incidents, the editor passed these on to Jung who, in turn, gave to Jaffé the task of submitting the letters to psychological analysis. The book is the result of her analysis; covering such topics as ‘Radiant or Luminous Ghosts’, ‘Relativity of Time and Space in the Unconscious’, and ‘Synchronistic Phenomena’.

This book is a celebration of the Jungian myth as the ‘new religion’ and describes the author's preoccupation with what he calls ‘an era of unparalleled impoverishment and depreciation of the human soul’. His project is to describe and give examples of the ‘inner life’ to help readers source the ‘reality of the soul’ and discover the redemptive power of consciousness. The book is actually three books in one, and is divided thus: 1) Delineation of the new religion (Part One); 2) Devotions for the new religion (Part Two); 3) A possible central image or theme of the new religion, the wounded inner child (Parts One & Two). The author invites us to dip into the book at any point since at all junctures ‘devotions’ ‘recall the reader to the inner world, the dwelling place of the soul’.
