Myths of Manhood: The Hero in Jungian Literature. Sydney: RLA Press, 2001. Pp. 191. Pbk. Aus.$22.00.
This book is published by the Department of Studies in Religion at Sydney University and seems only to be obtainable through them (email: ccusack@mail.usyd.edu.au). The rather densely packed layout and many pages of footnotes and references between the chapters betray its origin as Mark Byrne's doctoral thesis. Despite this, it is a lively read which explores the classical Jungian response to the Western need for the heroic. Ancient myths and modern popular culture provide examples of the hero archetype, which is examined through the writings of Jung, Von Franz, Campbell, Bly and many others.

Robert Kastenbaum is an American psychologist who has studied human expectations and experiences of death over forty years. He has worked closely with terminally ill, grieving and suicidal patients and their caregivers. This is the third edition of his book first published in 1972. A good deal has changed since then (most notably perhaps the rise of the hospice movement, in the USA as well as in Britain) so there are a number of updated chapters. It is a rich book, full of lively vignettes, and addressing topics like children and adolescents developing ideas about death, research projects involving different groups imagining deathbed scenes, the settings in which we die, the role of hospice staff, resuscitation dramas, suicide and physician-assisted suicide. There is much here that will be helpful to anyone working with the dying or wishing to think about how we die.
