The Psyche on Stage: Individuation Motifs in Shakespeare and Sophocles. Toronto: Inner City Books, 2001. Pp. 93. Pbk $16. 00.
Three papers by Edward Edinger on the development of the relationship between Self and ego are brought together in this short book. The first two use psychological analysis of two plays by Shakespeare, Measure for Measure and Romeo and Juliet, to explore archetypal manifestations of the sacred marriage, the coniunctio and the search for wholeness. Whilst the author is respectful of the individuation process of the people concerned, matters of transference or the relationship with the therapist are nowhere commented on and the overall tone is somewhat uncritical and idealizing. There are many illustrations, reproduced in colour, and a helpful bibliography with succinct summaries of the boo
