In 1994 Ann Lammers published a major work (Lammers 1994) on the collaboration between Jung and the English Dominican theologian Fr Victor White. At that time, a substantial number of Jung's letters to White had been published in the two-volume English edition of Jung's correspondence (Adler, ed. 1973), but the other half, White's letters to Jung, remained locked away in the Jung archives. Lammers, exceptionally, was allowed sight of White's letters by the Jung heirs, who were soimpressedbythe qualityofher work that they judged Jung's preconditions for release of the letters to have been met, and allowed the present co-editors to prepare this volume of both sides of the correspondence. The very existence of this volume is thus a direct testament to the high quality of Lammers’ scholarship.
The publication of The Jung-White Letters fully justifies the Jung heirs’ confidence in the quality of Lammers’ and Cunningham's scholarship and sensitivity. In her Introduction, Lammers recognizes the difference between this correspondence and the letters published in the Adler edition of Jung's letters. The latter gives an overview of Jung's thought during a period of fifty-five years of intellectual engagement with an extraordinary variety of minds. This volume gives access to a more intense and profound meeting in which two intellectual and spiritual heavyweights debate at full strength, and, as far as each was able or willing, expose their souls to one another. Unlike Adler, these editors have left the ‘rough edges, grammatical errors and eccentricities’ (p. xxix) of Jung's strikingly idiomatic English uncorrected, affording the reader an unusually intimate sense of Jung's voice and diction, so that reading this book often feels like eavesdropping on White and Jung's conversation. The high quality of sensitive, accurate scholarship is sustained in the critical apparatus provided (very detailed footnotes, bibliography and an index which is adequate though not absolutely compreh
