‘This would never happen to me’ is a familiar response to the subject of sexual boundary violations. Andrea Celenza's book enlightens us. Based on her extensive research and therapeutic treatment of therapists and clergy who have transgressed professional ethical codes, she argues that moral censure and a lack of insight drives open discussion of this topic underground—down into the Shadow of our psychoanalytic and psychotherapeutic societies. Celenza states that this hampers discussion, the reporting of violations, and the rehabilitation of those involved. She emphasizes that denying that this could happen to you, to me, to any of us—as analysts, as patients, as supervisors, as supervisees, as trainers, as trainees—leaves us all vulnerable and at risk.
