David Bell is a highly gifted, vigorously intelligent and passionate clinician whose work at the Tavistock Clinic in London on Borderline Personality Disorder and in making psychoanalysis comprehensible to new students has helped and inspired many. He will be the next President of the British Psychoanalytic Society and will no doubt bring his many talents to bear in steering it through some very sensitive times ahead in the UK for the depth psychologies. His article is a tricky one for a Jungian analyst to review—especially one who has also trained as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist—as the reviewer already has an assumption that there must be more than one way of looking at the psyche: Jungian and psychoanalytic. This immediately makes relative any claim to truth in David Bell's article (or at least to the whole truth). It also shows why postmodernism is attractive: it allows a defensive space in which there is freedom from someone else's attempts at hegemony.
