Van Eenwyk invites the reader to join him in what he describes as a ‘mutual active imagination’ of the unconscious, of image, of paradox and of the analytic relationship with chaos theory as his working frame. Van Eenwyk integrates his interest and understanding of chaos theory with Jung's model of the psyche. He is particularly interested in ways to gain deeper access to the conflicts and processes of trauma that prove difficult to understand and resistant to change. In the introduction he writes that one of the challenges of analytic work involves the ability to ‘read’ the unconscious with a sense of discernment and recognition of coping styles and defences. He adds to this challenge the question of how we transform these patterns. The first part of the book offers a framework of how he considers and understands these challenges. In the second part he takes us with him into the consulting room to illustrate how these patterns in the unconscious are identified and transformed.
