Who better than Toshio to remind us that cultural context is highly significant when Western approaches to and systems of psychology spread outside their homelands? Leaving aside questions of colonialism and missionarianism - never mind the commercial aspect that I mentioned in my lecture - it has also and ever been inspiring to see the move from one analytical psychology to a world in which there are many analytical psychologies. Jungian analysis has, like it or not in the hallowed halls of Zurich and London, broken free of its roots. Hence, the call that I made for an exotericism has, albeit not on purpose, been partially answered.
I also appreciated Toshio's deep understanding of the worldwide concern that has driven the interest in Jung's writings about ‘Africans’ to a place where there is a sense that ‘something should be done’. Clearly, apologising for Jung and for Jung's words is pointless given that he is no longer with us and was very much influenced by his own times wherein racial hierarchy was accepted. However, just for interest, my recent researches show that, even in Jung's circle, there was a degree of disquiet about - just to give one example - his passages on the Bushmen, one of which I mentioned in the lecture.
The problem is, by now, a problem for Jungian analysis and analysts to deal with. One thing that needs to be explored is why it has taken so long to communicate to the world that, whilst owing much to Jung, we analysts do not think about Africans, or other persons of colour and indigenous peoples, in the same way that he did.
Toshio is right to raise the possibility that the fact of there being so few Jungian analysts of African ancestry has economic, social and cultural causes. The implication is that persons of colour are not strongly represented in any school of psychotherapy because they lack the financial resources to join. And, sometimes, it is claimed that they don't want to join in any case.
This important point has led me to explore the
