‘With languages you are at home anywhere.’
This exhaustive piece of research into the importance and impact of language in analytic work, aims to a) ‘explore the bilingual therapist's experience of working in a second language’ with monolingual clients and b) to'explore the major functions of language within the therapeutic setting’. As a tri-lingual therapist I enjoyed this study, identifying with some of the visceral descriptions of what it can feel like to be other (exciting or disturbing) and to encounter the other on their turf, to struggle with translations and interpretations that may make semantic sense but have somewhat missed an emotional cue.
