It is with great pleasure that we introduce our Special Issue devoted to the two defining phenomena of 2020 - the COVID-19 pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement. It is the first time that the Journal has responded so unequivocally to contemporary events. Analysts are reflective by nature, and we acknowledge the challenge of bringing oneself to the task of writing whilst still ‘in’ the experience. In our call for papers, we asked for both personal and clinical reflections, which we hoped would offer snapshots from around the world as to how colleagues were being affected by these significant events, both personally and in their consulting rooms. We were therefore very pleased with the tremendous response, which makes this the largest ever edition of the Journal.
You will find 23 papers from analysts in Brazil, Denmark, Italy, Israel, Switzerland, the UK, the US and Australia. The themes that emerge in these contributions will, we hope, resonate with your own experiences of living and working through these challenging and precarious times. The topics in this issue include, for example, personal and collective trauma, cultural complexes, working online, dreams during COVID, working with adolescents during COVID, separation, loneliness, hate, intolerance, and inbetweeness, as well as hope and creative ways to find clarity, purpose and solace.
We hope that you find this Special Issue of interest and that it provides rich food for thought.
