Ann Casement has been a leading voice in analytical psychology, with numerous publications and many substantial contributions to the institutional aspects of the field. Throughout her career, Casement was invested in bridging Jung's understanding of the archetypal foundations of the psyche with developmental perspectives of the mind, and in the cross-fertilization of analytical psychology with philosophy, structural anthropology, neuroscience and theology, including Eastern religions. Her latest book, Integrating Shadow: Authentic Being in the World, published posthumously, is demonstrative of this breadth of erudition and the extensive reach of her intellectual interests.
The concept of the shadow in Jungian theory is, perhaps, a deceptively simple one. It is understood mostly as the aggregate of ego-dystonic characteristics, or the repository of all aspects of oneself which are deemed unacceptable or repugnant. And yet so much rests on this idea in Jungian psychology: The shadow is always the first major obstacle on the path to individuation. Its integration leads to a progressive widening of consciousness which Jung, drawing from the alchemist Gerhard Dorn, referred to as “unio mentalis”, i.e. the attainment of full knowledge of the heights and depths of one's own character.1 The examination and experiential recognition of the shadow as alive and present in one's inner and outer life is a painful moral achievement that transcends established conventions and societal norms.
The thrust of Casement's book and the main strength of her analysis is her emphasis on the notion of the shadow not as a descriptive psychological concept but as an urgent ethical challenge for the contemporary person. She discusses the integration of the shadow as a high-stakes moral and psychological effort, one which is central to the quality of collective life, social responsibility, individual fulfilment and authentic being in the world.
