This paper explores the implications of what is known about the interactions between couple relationships, psychological distress and long-term health conditions (LTCs). The key findings from research on couple therapy, the interactions between couple functioning and individual psychological problems and LTCs are reviewed and a case is made for psychotherapists and counsellors to include skills in working directly with couples as part of their regular practice. The implications of these findings for training providers and clinical supervisors are also discussed.
