NEWS FROM THE NATIONAL ACCREDITATION ASSOCIATION FOR PSYCHOANALYSIS:
Washington Hearing—Following a visit to the Department of Health, Education and Welfare by NAAP's Training Commission Vice President, Eloise Kayton, the eligibility committee of HEW scheduled a hearing date for September 1977. At this hearing, HEW will consider NAAP's application for national recognition as a professional association in the independent profession of psychoanalysis (not to be confused with medical analysis). President Turner of the University of Baltimore attended the NAAP Executive Meeting on April 22 as a representative of HEW to observe proceedings.
National University—Members of the Board of Directors of the National Psychoanalytic University met with representatives of the New York State Department of Education on March 17, 1977, regarding their application for a charter. The N.P.U. is considering several recommendations made by the NYSDE, including the merits of a shift from a degree-granting university with several masters and doctoral degrees to a professional school. Because of the emphasis on academic training and research in addition to clinical preparation this choice had not been the preferred approach. NAAP will continue to pursue its request for a New York State charter, along with the possibility of federal recognition or of recognition in another state.
