This book is to be highly recommended to both the experienced analyst and the beginning analyst. As Kernberg states in his preface, “The book presents a systematic analysis of borderline conditions—their psychopathology, diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment.” To this reviewer, the high points are Kernberg's excellent, extensive description and development of the nature of the borderline personality. With great care and skill he discusses the differential diagnosis of the various types of characterological disturbances and clearly distinguishes among them. Kernberg reserves the term borderline personality organization to describe those patients having a stable pathological personality organization.
