This compilation is well described by its title and subtitle. It comes highly recommended by Vamik Volkan and Sydney E. Pulver in dust-jacket blurbs and by Nathaniel Ross in a foreword. Socarides has assembled 31 papers dealing with specific affective states, none of them new and many familiar, all by classical Freudians, including Zilboorg, Deutsch, Greenson, Bergler, Bion, Kris. These are clinical studies: affects as reported and manifested in the analytic situation by the patient, are considered. Predictably in a classically oriented book, countertransference affects are nowhere considered. Lucid commentaries by Socarides accompany every contribution. Papers are arranged chronologically, from a historically important contribution on depression by to one by . This arrangement is possibly as good as any, but does not appear to be purposeful—that is, Socarides does not attempt to adduce an evolution of psychoanalytic understanding of affects. The selection is generous, amounting to about 220,000 words and is presented with ample type size and margins.
