Controversy in Psychiatry is a massive collection of articles by seventy-four different authors discussing twenty-six “controversies.” Although almost all the authors are medical doctors, and only a handful are psychoanalysts, there are several discussions that would be of interest to any mental health worker regardless of profession or orientation. Among these later discussions are articles on the training and professional status of psychiatrists which raise issues about the practice of psychotherapy by nonmedical doctors, articles on indications for medication and surgery including both psychosurgery and transsexual procedures, articles on a number of different modalities including hypnosis, group therapy, behavior therapy, and articles on a wide variety of social and legal issues. The articles specifically relating to psychoanalysis include one by Robert L. Stewart outlining some recent developments in classical psychoanalytic treatment, an article by Arnold M. Cooper and Robert Michels, and an article by Harley C. Shands on what could be called the sociology of analysts and analysands.
