The dedication of this volume makes clear, if clarification were needed, the theoretical and methodological ground of these writings:
“To Dr. Margaret Mahler—Independent thinker, researcher, and inspiring teacher.” These essays expand on and enrich Mahler's work on human development, following the vicissitudes of self object constancy well past the usual “separation and individuation” stages and through the life cycle. The book's first two sections deal with theoretical aspects and emphasize healthy development. The third and fourth sections include clinical as well as theoretical material and focus on deviant and pathological conditions. Failed object constancy, maternal depression and maternal deprivation are among subjects treated in detail. Among contributors are the three editors, Mahler and John B. McDevitt, Peter L. Giovacchini, Harold P. Blum, Albert J. Solnit, W. W. Meissner.
