Eighty years after publication of Freud's revelations concerning infantile sexuality, many schools of therapeutic thought have moved so far away from his original insights that Herbert S. Strean's book is a necessary corrective to the tendency to treat sexual dysfunctions without consideration of their psychodynamic and historical context. Strean provides seventy case examples of sexual conflicts and anxieties in clients of all ages. Furthermore, he shows, in the tradition of Freud's tracing of the vicissitudes of instinctual impulses, how underlying sexual disorders can be the basis for ostensibly nonsexual problems, phobias, addictions, passivities, etc. Strean provides a variety of assessment skills and therapies to guide helping professionals, from nurses to psychoanalysts, in their treatment of psychosexual problems.
