147th Interview: Harry opened his notebook to an account of some recent dreams and read aloud to Dr. T. One of the dreams was about a girl. That reminded Harry that, when he saw boys and girls going out together, he would decide that he himself wouldn't go out with a girl unless she was the motherly type.
Harry: I'm mixed up about this, but I have an idea that you want me to be mixed up.
Dr. T: I want you to be …. Why should you think so?
Harry: I don't know exactly. Generally, though, I think you believe that it's good for people to be uncertain in life. But it could be that I'm wrong. Maybe you really want me to be happy after all.
Dr. T: Why not? Why shouldn't you be happy?
Harry: I think I'll go home and decide not to be mixed up and unhappy any more.
Dr. T: A good idea. But, first of all, tell me this: Why is it that you think about going home and being happy simply because I don't object to your being happy?
Harry: Well, I suppose it's because I think I should agree when somebody tells me something. I guess I don't think too much about what I want myself. My mother always tells me: “Harry, you must go along with people. You must agree with what they say.”
