Anaclitic countertransference refers to feelings arising in the analyst over the course of treatment which are best understood as feelings patients needed but never received from their early objects. Questions are raised as to the corresponding transference states and their relation to both object and narcissistic transferences. Analogies are drawn to Balint's concepts of the basic fault and the new beginning. Finally consideration is given to the use of anaclitic countertransference to resolve recalcitrant resistances.
