This informative collection of papers from the 21st Annual Margaret Mahler Symposium on Child Development focuses on the analytic psychotherapy of incest. The papers present a valuable perspective on the etiology and treatment of these difficult cases from a psychoanalytic point of view informed by the object relations theory of Mahler. Detailed and moving clinical illustrations underscore psychodynamic configurations which suggested to these practitioners that incest had occurred in their patients' pasts. The authors demonstrate how this knowledge framed their understanding of the transference/countertransference matrix in each case.
The book's uniqueness resides in the unusual combination of clinical cases provided by seven psychoanalysts, and related theoretical and technical discussions which demonstrate an understanding of the intrapsychic world of incest victims and their families.
This book is recommended to therapists and students who want to expand their capacity for identifying, understanding and treating victims of incest.
