“The immune shall inherit the earth” is an astute comment made at an AIDS conference by a well-known psychiatrist. Recent studies indicate that autoimmune factors are found in increasing numbers of disorders from juvenile diabetes to multiple sclerosis, and possibly Alzheimer's disease. Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI), the new medical specialty, focuses on the interaction between emotions and immune processes. Clinical vignettes are presented to illustrate the possible interaction.
