Obsessive compulsive symptoms can function to ward off aggressive and libidinal impulses, specifically primitive anal longings. Through the narcissistic transference a patient developed the capacity to recognize, accept, and verbalize the full strength of his impulses, which led to a dramatic reduction in the anal symptomotology. Once these impulses were acknowledged, the patient's core problems then surfaced. This patient is unable to satisfy his early longings in a relationship because the woman becomes overpowering and invasive. A solution to this problem lies in investigating this area as it is relived in the transference.
