This paper presents a psychoanalytic approach to the treatment of schizoid patients, identifying the therapeutic need of such patients and using optimal frustration as a means of crafting interventions which meet this need. Pertinent literature and clinical experience are the author's basis for conceptualizing treatment with these patients in terms of optimal speech patterns for both participants, which can be transference and/or countertransference driven. Successful treatment is seen as interpersonal exercise which benignly exploits the patient's relational needs while helping the patient articulate the contact anxieties and conflict with them.
