The results indicate that devaluing serves as a means of discharge for her sadism and aggression, as a defense against awareness of self-hatred and longing for closeness, and as a distancing maneuver that interferes with the direct expression of specific negative images. On a deeper level, the patient's devaluation of the analyst represents a devaluation of parts of herself which she has not succeeded in integrating into her personality.
