The paper, through a series of vignettes, describes an aspect of unverbalized communication which suggests a level of symbolic imagery that may, though apparently disconnected from the patient's insession process, actually connect with deeper layers of consciousness. The “poised attention” of the analyst and the “attention potential” of the patient together create the setting for a unique dynamic and a particular kind of communication. Several cases illustrate the author's experience with a state of suspended attention in which messages/communication received are recognized as unconscious language and utilized in resolving resistance to deep emotional expression and to memories previously unexpressed.
