The need to feel loved, as distinct from to be loved, is universal, and the conditions for its satisfaction are highly specific for each individual. This need, when unmet, mobilizes the need to hate. When these two tendencies are not resolved in the course of development they are treated as resistances to maturation. Their resolution in the analysis is achieved through the use of modern psychoanalytic techniques based on emotional understanding and emotional communication, and are aimed at facilitating the appropriate release of frustration-aggression and on supplying the nurturing function within the analytic framework. The passive aim to feel loved gives way to the active aim “I want to love.” Case material is presented throughout to illustrate relevant dynamics and the approach to treatment.
