Mounting evidence indicates that old age provides opportunities for further growth. This paper explores the effects of modern psychoanalytic techniques on emotional communication in a group of well-functioning older adults over a period of four years. It examines the results of working with resistances manifested in individuals and the group, and demonstrates how individuals and the group itself changed and grew. Working with resistance from a modern psychoanalytic perspective is detailed, and the historical background of therapy for elders is described. Clinical vignettes illustrate the changes that occurred and demonstrate how the lives of group members were enhanced through participation in this group experience.
