This paper outlines psychoanalytic conceptions of love and its relationship to finding an object. It discusses Freud's ideas of “refinding,” the influence of the oedipal complex and his classifications of libidinal types. It then reviews the contributions of Balint (1947), Dix (1967), Mahler (1963), Kernberg (1995), Kohut (1971) and Benjamin (1995) before presenting the author's contributions.
