The following paper consists of an annotated verbatim transcript of a single session in which “heroic” measures were employed to resolve a long-standing stalemate in an obstinate case of a man who displayed a particularly refractory and abrasive form of resistance in the context of an intense negative transference. The interventions were limited to mirroring and ego-syntonic joining. The actual clinical material is offered so as to focus attention on the problems of practice and technique rather than of theory.
