In this case presentation the focus is on the examination of the countertransference and counterresistance problems faced by an analyst in an effort to generate progress in the treatment of a paranoid patient. Procedures that were employed depart considerably from the paradigm of classical psychoanalysis, because traditional means had proved fruitless and the nature of the patient's paranoia was such that it had taken the form of a full-blown delusional system with me as its central character. My induced feelings shaped my treatment strategy in working with this patient. The use of interpretations was avoided in favor of focusing almost exclusively on reacting to transference communications and resistances and joining his resistances. This succeeded in dissolving his major resistance to communication so he could begin to talk.
