This paper takes as its point of departure Freud's comment that after all, psychoanalysis is actually a cure effected through love. It tries to show how the process we call psychotherapy is a particular form of love that is designed to cure; and furthermore that it is not the therapist's love that cures but the process of psychotherapy itself. The specific property that marks mental health is the capacity to act in a loving way. Pathological narcissism interferes with this capacity. In order to effect a cure an analyst must be capable of having the “right” feelings and must provide patients with a context in which they may feel safe enough to say everything. In doing so analysts may be called upon to overcome or to transcend their own transferences and countertransferences.
