Since 1940 a cultural revolution has taken place regarding sexuality. Even the most superficial examination of the behavior of elementary school children and teenagers reveals this. One result has been that today's children do not pass through childhood with quite the same attitudes toward sex as their parents did, i.e., a sexual latency period. At the same time the classical psychoneurotic that Freud described is being displaced by patients with borderline and impulse disorders. The question is raised as to whether the decrease in neurotic patients and the increase in the number of impulse disorders may be attributed to the gradual disappearance of the classical latency period.
