Eight clinical vignettes illustrate how the symbolic imagery of the countertransference dream assists the analyst by revealing awarenesses that are dynamic and emergent. The countertransference dream is an unconscious communication, privately recorded by the analyst. Within its discrete venue, the analyst can study the subjective and objective inductions which accompany the process of regression. Analysis of the nuanced nature of manifest representations guides the analyst's deepening awareness into a dream's unconscious essence, as well as her understanding of the transference continuum. Despite the numerous theoretical controversies associated with the production of a countertransference dream, its through analysis provides the analyst with vital clinical data. This paper posits that the countertransference dream is a measure of adjustment, as opposed to disturbance, an enactment of the most fundamental analytic intimacy: transference.
