Regressive communication is a negative mode of engaging and maintaining contact with the other in an intimate relationship. It is repetitive and charged with negative emotions such as frustration, irritation, resentment, anger, hatred, disappointment, despair, anguish or hopelessness. Once set in motion it invariably leads to disjunction in the relationship. Its most prominent characteristic is its high degree of subjectivity, determined by unconscious processes in which regression to the developmental phase of magical thinking and infantile omnipotence plays a major role. When in that mode of relating, boundaries between self and other become blurred and give rise to distorted perceptions of reality, manifested primarily through projective identification.
