What makes genocide and mass violence possible? The author proposes an evolutionary development of violence, a continuum that grows out of a multiplicity of small, conveniently rationalized events embedded in our daily lives. Drawing on observations and studies from her work as a cultural anthropologist as well as personal experiences, the author supports her ideas with descriptions of child death in Brazil and her parents' end-of-life stay in a nursing home.
