Revenge has many faces: it can be a constructive way of directing rage onto another rather than at the self; it is an unavoidable outcome of the parent-child relationship; in many cultures, its principles are embedded in the law; and, in its starkest form, it is a desire to obliterate the offender. The author examines these various perspectives on revenge and shares the story of a woman, much like herself, who in a moment of rage and passion murdered her mother. In closing she discusses solutions to help us deal with the power of our destructive drive.
