Patients who need to experience the analyst as a good presence, and who succeed in doing so, dread risking the loss of that experience as a consequence of becoming aware of their own anger or any negative feeling toward the analyst. This paper explores the ways in which four patients experienced knowing their feelings of anger toward the analyst. The author discusses the narcissistic transference and the narcissistic defense and explains how two of these patients were gradually able to move from a narcissistic transference to an object transference.
